I saw a good amount of use from Berserkers against barbarians. Their other bonuses are two unique units: Berserkers and Norwegian Ski Infantry. This came in handy with the amount of water around, including various rivers-represented-as-oceans. Their unique ability, Viking Fury, gives added movement to embarked and disembarking units. I went with a random Civ and it gave me Denmark. The map maker also made the questionable decision to use ocean tiles to represent the rivers in the DQ1 map. I had my piece of the world and went a very long time before meeting another Civ. Pretty much the only way to get a good mix of production and food was to settle at the border of a huge landform or settle in a forest and chop a lot of it down.ĭQ1’s map is also designed with a series of choke points and such that exploring the world is a pseudo dungeon at times.

When looking for a place to put a city you can generally find a spot with food boosting plains and production boosting forests and mines close to each other. Civ5 features relatively small groups of like tiles together. The map was well done but it also highlighted the differences between an NES RPG map and a Civ5 one. It’d be weird to play in Alefgard with the Alefgard Civ and have the cities not be in the right place or for the kingdom to be in a tiny piece of their own map. I debated pulling in my Alefgard Civ but decided against it. Now I finally got around to playing a game on the map. A long time ago I downloaded a fanmade map for Civ5 based on the overworld of Dragon Quest 1.
